Guaranteed PDF Decrypter purpose
The primary goal of GuaPDF is to
  • remove restrictions on any PDF document (you should have the right to do it, for example, if you forgot the password). Any Acrobat version up to 9 is supported, even with 256-bit AES or 128-bit RC4 encryption. PDF permission password removal is an instant process. Decrypted file can be opened in any PDF viewer without any restrictions so you may edit/copy/print it.

GuaPDF can be also used for
  • remove the PDF open password. Decryption of the file with password for opening is guaranteed for PDF files with 40-bit key only (Acrobat 3, 4 compatible encryption). This process takes several days on one home computer.
Only standard PDF security is supported, neither third-party plug-ins nor e-books.

This is GUI utility for Win32 and command-line utility for Linux, Solaris/SunOS, Mac OS.

PDF security overview
The standard security of PDF documents can have two different of passwords: a Document Open password and a Permissions password. When a Document Open password (also known as a user password) is set, anyone who tries to open the PDF must type in the password. When a Permissions password (also known as a master password) is set, recipients don't need a password to open the document, but they must type the Permissions password to set or change the restricted features. If the PDF is secured with both types of passwords, it can be opened with either password, but only the Permissions password allows the user to change the restricted features.

Used crypto algorithms were being improved with PDF developing - up to PDF version 1.4 only 40-bit keys have been used, then the 128-bit ones came, and starting from version 1.6, AES encryption is being added. In Acrobat 9, 256-bit AES keys were introduced.
However, PDF security system is implemented so that a file with restrictions may be decrypted instantly, irrespective of the password length, even for 256-bit keys. A document with password for opening, using 40-bit key, can be decrypted on a modern computer within several days by using guaranteed decryption. To open a document with 128 or 256-bit key, only brute force can be used.

  • Distributed (20-clients) version. This version process both security methods (i.e. open and permissions passwords), have support for up to 20 clients in local network for fast 40-bit key searching (from €/$49)

Q: What version should I choose?
A: If can open PDF file, but can not print, edit etc, get the Local veriosn (former restriction remover) version. If you can't even open file, first of all you need to test your file (using DEMO version) if it has 40-bit key encryption. If yes, you may choose any version depending of number of computers you've got.

Q: I've tested GuaPDF on my file, but got only blank pages (or some errors)
A: It is DEMO version, it can process small files only.

Q: Ok, but how can I sure the full version will work on my file?
A: If DEMO parses your file with no errors, the full version will work fine.

Q: Ok, how long will it take?
A: Restriction removal is instant (may be few minutes on very large files). To estimate key searching time, run DEMO version (and divide it to the number of your PCs).

Q: Are non-standard security handlers supported?
A: No, please run DEMO to make sure your file is supported.
